Autumn's been lovely this year... but goodness where did that cold wind come from!

Brrrr … June has arrived and winter has slammed into us with a vengeance here in Southern Victoria. The wind is icy and days overcast and grey. It was such a sudden change! The week before last we were getting dreamy, calm, warm and clear autumn days, the weather you hang out for all year – then, WHAMO!, the icy tendrils of winter hit. It was like a slap in the face, just when the dogs and I were getting into the swing of fencing in the sun.

Guess it had to come sometime. didn't it?! And at least the wind hasn’t started howling again yet (but now I’ve said that …!)

So with cold, sleet and sometimes snow now here, scarves are a constant piece of my daily apparel. I have to admit I’m gathering these things at a rate faster than my middle son eats chocolate cake. Or my eldest son scoffs down jelly slice (and that’s pretty darn slick). I'm falling in love with silk having discovered, via my late great aunt, that despite its appearance of being light and quite insubstantial, it is also INCREDIBLY WARM! I think its worth every cent you shell out (Yes, I know, but it's SILK!) and has fast become my winter “go-to” wear. Which brings me to this captivating and very helpful link I found the other day on some different ways to wear scarves. If you’re like me, I had a limited way to tie the things. Not any more. It’s totally worth a look. Brrrr …)

Stay warm in the south as we all try and get used to winter’s chill. Be thankful in the north you don't live down here!

Pickle Yarn

I’ve also invested in some ‘Pickle Yarn’ from one of my favourite yarn shops, Say! Little Hen. I plan to crochet myself a nice scarf from this divine hand-dyed 100% wool. I’ll let you know how I go.

Last Sunday I was in Traralgon at the Latrobe Literary Festival and I just want to thank those readers who came out on a really disgusting day (picture rain hammering down so hard the author on stage had to talk REALLY loud) to hear about my writing life and the journey books have taken me on. Not to mention us ALL getting to hear from the three other fabulous authors in attendance. It was a fantastic day and full credit goes to the organisers from the Latrobe Shire. It’s rare, we, in south-east rural Victoria, get access to such an event.

Next week, on Tuesday June 6, 2017 and as part of my lazy LAKE HILL tour around Gippsland, I’ll be at the Trafalgar Community Centre, Princes Hwy Trafalgar, from 11am chatting about LAKE HILL! You can find out more details here.

On the same day (Tuesday June 6, 2017) I’ll also be at the Korumburra Library (165 Commercial St, Korumburra) from 2pm chatting about LAKE HILL. Details here.

I’d love to see you in either place, and there’ll books on hand to purchase, should you like me to sign one for you.

Next Thursday evening I'll also be at the Collins Bookstore in Traralgon (3/74 Seymour St, Traralgon) from 5-6pm to sign books or just say hello! Loving // My new hand dyed sock yarn which is going to be scarf yarn by the time I’ve finished crocheting with it.

Eating // Hot tomato soup with crusty bread, just the thing for the start of winter.

Drinking // My favourite tea – Earl Grey but trying to cut out the sugar. It’s a struggle.

Feeling // Happy we’ve got a start on repairing the fence the kangaroos have wrecked on our new agistment block.

Making // A casserole called ‘Devilled Beef’ from my new Sally Wise ‘The Complete Slow Cooker’ recipe book. It smells yum!

Thinking // About how sad I am the LAKE HILL book tour is winding to a close and how many wonderful readers I have been able to catch up with over the last few weeks. It’s like catching up with one BIG literary family! Also, I keep remembering a line I read the other day, which went something like … ‘Be grateful for what you have and be nice to people.’ That’s about it in a nutshell, isn’t it?

And it's sitting at No 8 on Random House's in-house best-sellers list.

Our Gippsland based book is rubbing shoulders with heavyweights like the Fifty Shades Trilogy, James Patterson's latest and Danielle Steele. There's even a Man Booker Prize winner (Richard Flannagan's Narrow Road to the Deep North)...

I'm trying to stay calm here ... but you know, that's such a wonderful thing for a rural based, laugh-out-loud, heart warming story about the thrills and spills of life on the land to be hanging out in that kind of company. {smiley} ... So please forgive me, but, dash it, I can't do the calm thing any longer. I'll just have to jump around and yell a bit here on my hill - WOO HOO!!! YA HOO!!!

You readers are the best!

Oh and it's even made it to your TV screens! Yep. ROSE RIVER Is currently screening across Foxtel, (which I don't have, but hope a lot of Australians do have and take a little notice of ... {smiley})

Oh dear, I'm feeling a bit dizzy. All this dancing around is too much and now the cows are looking at me all weird ...

Thank you, thank you, thank you all of you wonderful, supportive readers. It's such a thrill to know that you still love to read our stories.

Now a bit of a catchup as life's been at break-neck speed since ROSE RIVER came out.

ROSE RIVER LAUNCH

It was such a buzz to catch up with around 180 wonderful readers and mates at the Blue Gables Winery, Upper Maffra West, for a fabulous afternoon event to to launch ROSE RIVER into the big wide world. What a day!

I started to chat with people as soon as I arrived, moving my way from table to table, thanking people for coming to support us on the day. By the time I'd gone around once, more people had arrived and I was just about to head off round again, but found out it was time to be interviewed by well-known former radio identity Penny Monger! I'm really sorry that I didn't get to chat with everyone who came on the day, but I do hope you all enjoyed yourselves. I have heard tell that everyone had a great time and Penny did a fabulous job of the interview, drawing out the inspirations and stories behind the writing of ROSE RIVER. What fun we had!

I was also thrilled to have in attendance fellow Gippsland author Barry Heard (WELL DONE THOSE MEN amongst other titles) and his lovely wife. And yes, we just had to get lots of photos!

ROSE RIVER TOUR PART 1

Monday morning dawned bright and clear (until the muttering started), and it was time to head off on the first leg of the ROSE RIVER book tour. With a Toyota Corolla as our hire car, it took a LOT of pushing and shoving to get two women, two suitcases, boxes and boxes of books and all the associated paraphernalia into the car ... but we did it ... eventually (sucked in tummies due to seats being pushed so far forward), we took off at around 9am. With my good friend Jen as co-pilot, Albury was our first stop after a beautiful drive over Mount Hotham (the wildflowers were spectacular). I just HAVE to mention the homemade ice-cream at Morrie's place in Harrietville. It is superb. It could give the ice cream I found outside Bundberg in QLD on last year's book tour a run for it's money! Morrie's is a MUST stop if you're in the vicinity. It's even worth driving from Glenmaggie for!

After a lovely night with the Dymocks Albury book club, we travelled onto Grenfell where we were met by librarian Ann, who had arranged the most delightful event. Ann gave me the very best introduction I have ever had in my entire career (books or otherwise) and the luncheon looked just delicious. Unfortunately we had to move on, but we were greeted in Bathurst by Kathryn at BooksPlus and her lovely staff, with a cuppa plus a divine homemade carrot cake! YUMMY! Oberon, Mudgee (where we managed to lock ourselves out of our room whilst wearing P.J.'s!) and then to Wellington we travelled.

It was here I met the most talented group of ladies who had formed the local Wellington craft group nicknamed SABLE - Stuff Accummulated Beyond Life Expectancy {wink} Their craft work was out of this world.

Onwards to Dubbo (after losing the non-descript white Corolla for a good 10 minutes :)), and a lady who had travelled 5 hours from out the back of Bourke to hear my talk, buy all my books and say g'day. My oh my, was I chuffed (and amazed). Turns out she also breeds some of my most favourite cattle (Santa Gertrudis) and her husband loves old machinery (just like H) and was setting up a museum. I can feel a trip to Bourke coming on sometime in our future. {smiley}

A four hour drive out to Griffith library for a talk (with a little stop at a delighful homewares shop called Kristy's Cottage in West Wyalong where I did some bank balance damage ...ho hum ...) and then it was time to head east again. Peter and staff at the incredible Collins Bookstore in Wagga made us very welcome (Swoon, this is the bookstore to end all bookstores) and I signed piles and piles of books.

Jugiong Writer's Festival was next on the itinerary where I met up with Freda Marnie Nicholls (LOVE SWEAT AND TEARS etc.), Peter Rees (THE ANZAC GIRLS etc.), Tim Fischer and Sulari Gentill (ROWLAND SINCLAIR series). It was a beautiful day for an inspriring and well-run festival.

Canberra and the Romance Readers Convention was the last stop on the list. A panel with fellow rural authors Barbara Hannay, Cheryl Adnams along with US author supremo Victoria Dahl was a highlight.

Finally at 4pm Sunday we set the bonnet of the Corolla for home, landing over the farm's cattle grid at 11.10pm on Sunday night. We dodged a few roo's but we were finally home. Whew!

ROSE RIVER TOUR PART 2

This week (March 18 - March 21, 2015) we are off again. Western and South Western Victoria is our destination with events at Waurn Ponds, Ballarat, Horsham, Hamilton, Warrnambool, Colac, Gisborne and Fountain Gate. Please see the appearances page for details. As you know by now, I love to meet the readers of my books. I really hope to meet you somewhere and we can chat about the inspirations behind ROSE RIVER, writing, publishing, and anything else we'd care to waffle on about!

ROSE RIVER TOUR PART 3 - LARDNER PARK FARM FIELD DAYS 26TH - 29TH MARCH, 2015

I will be at Farmworld, Lardner Park, Warragul for the full four days, that's when I haven't ducked away for 10 minutes to check out boots, shirts, hats, plants, wood stoves and interesting cattle .

We will be at our usual spot in the General Interest Pavillion (GIP17). Look for the red and white gingham table cloths and me sitting up my rustic, handmade signing table. We have a gorgeous NEW Farmworld pack to giveaway this year with every copy of ROSE RIVER sold (as long as stocks last). So get in early for some nice treats! Love to see you there!!!

Hello there and welcome to our community at Voice of the Bush. I am feeling lighthearted this morning because, a) my quarterly BAS is done -YAY! and b) ROSE RIVER is finally here!

ROSE RIVER IS HERE & TOUR DETAILS BELOW

We're jumping up and down in great excitement up here in the hills at Glenmaggie, because today, ROSE RIVER, is starting to appear around the country. Yes! It can be downloaded to your ereaders from this morning (I've updated as many of the buy links on the book page as I can find), and it will start appearing on shelves in all major book stores and most department stores (other than KMart). If you don't see ROSE RIVER because it's sold out, please ask for it, especially in places like BIG W and Target. If they don't know you're looking, they can't pass onto their book buyers they didn't order enough!

I also wanted to let you all know - especially those who have read my ebook novella A BUSH CHRISTMAS - that the start of ROSE RIVER is much the same as the novella. Pretty much identical in fact, but hang with me. Reacquaint yourselves with Jaime and Stirling and their adventures at Burdekins Gap, because a short while into the story, you'll be thrown into the explosive and hilarious new adventures of this city girl and her infuriating station manager. I had so much fun writing the rest of this book that I want to sincerely thank all those who wrote to me to ask (and beg ) for the rest of the story. It's been a wild ride.

INSPIRATION

For those of you interested in where the inspiration for ROSE RIVER originated, we have to go back to 2012. I received a phone call from my publisher.

Bev: 'Margareta, have you got anything lying in the back of the cupboard - a story, a book, anything at ALL we can put into an ebook?'

Me: 'Argh ... (gulp) ... nope.' (BELLA'S RUN, a No.1 best seller, was my first novel after a few years studying the craft of writing!)

Bev: 'Do you think you can write me a novella say in, oh, six weeks?'

Me: 'Oh yeah, sure, I can do that (whilst thinking, What am I saying?! I still have to write HOPE'S ROAD!).

Bev: 'Great! I'll contact your agent with the details. This will be fabulous!' Clunk.

Me: Now staring at the disconnected phone and muttering, 'What have I done?' Fabulous? I don't even know what a novella is! A few moments passed. Inspiration struck. I scrambled for the receiver, and rang my great mate Kate Belle (the QUEEN of novella's) and said, 'Kate, in ten words or less, how do I write a novella?' (Kate can talk the craft of writing all day . She gave me the basic outline of 'late in, early out, ten or so episodic chapters in between.' Right. O-kay.

I hang up the phone muttering again 'I like words! How can I possibly tell a story in only 35,000 of them?' and find H at the office door. 'Want to come for a ride on the motorbike?' he asks.

I look out the window. There's a stunning blue sky; it's a bright and sunny picture-book day. I don't want to tell him I've just signed on for a novella as well as the book. I don't want to tell him I'm currently spinning out big time, so I say, 'Why not, I've got nothing better to do ...' (ho hum ...)

H says: 'Deal is though, you're not allowed to think about writing.'

Me: 'Okay.' (Not think about writing?! How can I not think about writing this afternoon?)

We take the motorbike and ride up through the hills, along the incredibly beautiful Macalister River Valley, weaving and gliding our way around hair-pin corners and along riverside straights. My mind is free of anything other than the feel of the bike, my limbs at one with my husbands as we ride through the hills. It was truly inspiration from the elements because as I rode I intuitively started to plot my novella about Jaime Hanrahan. How she would come to rural Burdekins Gap and her hilarious adventures there.

We reached home after a few hours away, and as we took off our helmets H said to me with a grin, 'What were you thinking about for the past few hours?'

I didn't have to say a word. He just knew. H is like that.

The novella went on to be a #1 best seller on iTunes, and was a finalist in the prestigious, Romantic Novella of the Year Award.

And now it's the basis of a full-length print book called, ROSE RIVER.

From small things, big things grow.

Actually as I post this I'm in NSW, but when I dreamed up this blog posting, I was heading there... I think.

Now everyone should be as thoroughly confused as I am these days!

But it was lovely to get home last weekend, a weekend full of favourite things - family, country music, & swimming at a local waterhole, we're back on the road and staring at the black top for 8hrs and 26 minutes according to Kate, the illustrious GPS.

Note I said Kate, because I've ditched 'Karen' and I'm now on the road with my wonderful friend Andrea, and HER geographical nemesis is Kate {wink}

**(and your website Karen is very grateful as now she can stop feeling worried everytime you're yelling at 'Karen'!)**

Mind you - we chose 'Kate' because 'Frank from Australia' was waayyyy tooo slow ...

Anyway - here we were heading through Far East Gippsland on the way up.

Sorry everybody - the book tour has started so I'm on the road again (queue singing...).

I will be posting some stuff about the wonderful launch night as soon as I can, but suffice to say, if you leave the kids in charge of the camera you are going to get a lot of photos of faces being pulled. Will have to sort through and see what I can find that's "publishable". It was a fabulous night, and I'm so very grateful and thrilled that so many of you lovely beautiful people came.

Before I forget too - today I'm being interviewed on ABC Statewide Drive (doing the interview this morning, will be played sometime this afternoon). Will shout if I find out a time that it's going to be played on air.

Right... Tour photos I can do. First Readers Emporium in Traralgon with Andrea, Mark, Jesse and Annabelle. Beautiful shop, lovely helpful, knowledgeable staff. Go there if you're in Traralgon.

Next up was a lovely time with the Paynesville Writers Group at Bairnsdale. This is a fabulous, active, busy, friendly group and it was a wonderful chance to catch up with them all.

I'm Home

I’m home. The whirlwind touring to promote my debut novel, Bella’s Run … has finally come to a halt. I got to meet some absolutely lovely people, visited some beautiful places, met new friends and caught up with old ones. We sincerely had a ball even when driving through flood water in Southern NSW.

I know we shouldn’t have but where else were we to go .. the book tour must go on!

I’d like to thank each and everyone of you - readers, booksellers, book store owners, friends and family - who took time out to come and say hello, buy my book, promote Bella’s Run and generally be so supportive that I was truly humbled. It’s been one heck of a ride.

To sit down for longer than five minutes, rather than treat my front door as a revolving one like those in the flash hotels you visit in the city (if you’re lucky), was rather a novelty.

(wish my backdoor looked as nice as this one!)

I got to park my good Wrangler coat on the rack, my high heels in the cupboard. After kissing and hugging ‘H’, ‘The Chick Magnet’, ‘the Inventor’ and the ‘Princess’, I exited the back door …

… to grab my oilskin vest (with its hayband and leather gloves hiding in the pockets) slip into my trusty old Red Back’s (which I adore) and set out to greet …

AHA … My mum’s back!

… my dog, Lucy who is my faithful ‘bitsa everything’ companion, whether I’m writing, in the ute, out in the paddock or just doing stuff.

But all in all it was lovely to be home.

I turned my focus to the garden for a bit …

HOPE’S ROAD edits are now on my desk and I’m working on those amidst farm jobs with ‘H’ and kid duties. There is never enough time in the day and I suspect I’ll be still saying that when Christmas comes …
