And so, Lake Hill is launched. Huge thanks to all you wonderful readers who have bought, read, talked about, and generally supported Lake Hill as much as you have. The book reached No. 2 on the Collin's Booksellers Best Seller list (The Barefoot Invester, pipped me at the post, darn it all :) and was still going great guns at No. 6. Apparently the book is plastered on light walls at the Sydney, Brisbane and Perth airports too, but as I'm nowhere near those lovely places, I'll have to take my publisher's word for it :)

Onwards with the Gippsland LAKE HILL tour! This weekend is the fabulous Latrobe City Literary Festival!

On Sunday, I’ll be joining author’s Paul Mitchell, Scot Gardner, and Dorothy Johnston from 10 – 4pm at the Traralgon Library. If you’d like to meet your favourite author, ask questions about their books, learn about the creative writing process or find out how to write your OWN book, this is a fabulous opportunity to mine four authors’ brains in the one room!

And for the cooks in the room who saw my carrot cake on Facebook the other day, I promised to share the recipe here. This carrot cake is no fuss cooking at it’s best. It’s moist, and absolutely delicious. And it’s a large cake so should last for quite a few smoko’s! (Note for Jenny & Wayne C: this is the one I need to bring to your house when we come look at your cattle {smiley})

Carrot Cake

Ingredients

CAKE INGREDIENTS

2 ½ cups Self Rising Flour

1 teaspoon Bi-Carb Soda

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1 1/2 cups sugar

5 eggs

1 ¼ cups vegetable oil

2 cups walnut halves

4 cups grated carrot

½ cup well drained pineapple (crushed)

CREAM CHEESE FROSTING INGREDIENTS

185gm butter, softened

185gm cream cheese, softened

1 teaspoon of vanilla

2 ¼ cups icing sugar

good squirt of lemon juice

Method

Preheat oven to 170 deg. Grease a 25 cm (or thereabouts) cake pan. Line base and sides with baking paper. (I used a 26cm round spring form cake tin as that’s what I had in the cupboard.)

Sift dry ingredients into a big bowl on mix master. (Preferably a beautiful raspberry pink Kitchen Aid Mix Master, which hopefully your family gave to you for your birthday as your old second-hand Sunbeam, died. ) Briefly mix gently. Slowly add in sugar, eggs and oil. When combined add, carrot, pineapple and walnuts. Mix until well combined again.

Pour mixture into prepared cake tin. Bake for approx. 1- 1 ¼ hours or until you insert skewer into centre and it comes out clean. Turn onto wire rack to cool. (DO NOT LET ANYONE EAT IT YET! The best is still to come …)

CREAM CHEESE ICING: Beat butter, cream cheese and vanilla in small bowl of mix master until light and fluffy. Gradually mix in sifted icing sugar until combined and add a squirt of lemon juice.

Spread frosting over cold cake. Can decorate with extra walnuts. I didn’t and it was fine. I figured all the walnuts in the mixture were enough for my kids to manage :) (The little darlings aren't big fans of nuts ... No comments about their mother please ..)

The original recipe was from the Australian Women’s Weekly, which I have tweaked a little.

Our book launch for LAKE HILL is a sell-out! Thank you to everyone who has responded in any way to the invitation to help celebrate the arrival of my seventh book! It should be a fabulous night!

SO, if you aren’t at the book launch to get a signed copy, where can you get LAKE HILL?

At any good book store, is the short answer! And if you can’t see it, ask for it and the bookstore can order it in. It’s that easy!

I’ll also be at the East Gippsland Library in Bairnsdale TOMORROW Thursday April 27 at 2pm and then again at 5.30pm, chatting about LAKE HILL. Elaine from Just Books, Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance, will also be there, with plenty of books for sale, which I can sign for you.

I’ll also be at the East Gippsland Field Days, Aerodrome Road, Bengworden with the lovely Elaine and team again on both Friday April 28 (9am-3pm) and Saturday April 29 (9am-4pm). So come and say hello, and purchase your copy of LAKE HILL, which I can sign especially for you. Or perhaps you might like to buy and give any of my books as a gift to mum for MOTHER’S DAY? I can sign them for her too. We will also have some lovely matching bookmarks. What a nice gift for that special mum in your life.

Next week on Wednesday May 3, I’ll be at the Heyfield Library (42 MacFarlane Street, Heyfield) from 2pm chatting about LAKE HILL. Bookings are essential. Ph: 51482644. I cannot tell you how excited I am to be having a chat at one of my own local libraries. Especially Heyfield. The library there is as lovely as Cath, who runs it. Better till it’s only a 15-minute drive down the road. Awesome. What? I still haven’t told you about my new car??? I’m such a tease …

Over the coming weeks I’ll also be at Rosedale, Traralgon, Trafalgar, Korrumburra and Moonee Ponds, just to name a few places. Details of events are now going up onto my events page.

You’ll also see the cover for LAKE HILL hanging out on the huge light walls in the airports across Australia (I KNOW! I’m going to have to drive the 5 hours to Tullamarine just to see it myself!). So, if you happen to see a fellow traveller pick my book up at the airport, or in any bookstore or BIG W or Target or any newsagent that has novels on the shelves, could you possibly give me a good shout out? Shove them in the direction of the counter whilst telling them you know the author and she’s a really nice farmer from up in them there hills in East Gippsland who tells a reasonable yarn; makes you laugh, cry and curse and well, she really loves chocolate, so unless you buy the book, her chocolate fund will be very poor … where was I...

Last newsletter I chatted about my back titles as eBooks, (they’re all still on sale). But for those of you who are audiobook lovers, the pre-order links for LAKE HILL are here as well. The LAKE HILL audio book will be released concurrently with the print and eBooks. Yahoo! (All dairyfarmers who love to listen to audio while milking or truck drivers, take note!)

There's a Hint of Spring in the Air

With pressing family and farm commitments, I’ve had to take a hiatus from the book world to concentrate on my loved ones. I’ve also had to reassess all my commitments – writing, family & farm – and thus my new book LAKE HILL is now slated for a 2017 Mother’s Day release rather than Christmas. I wanted to make this the very best novel I could, for your ultimate reading enjoyment, and needed more time to craft this wonderful story that I so want to share with you.

It’s been a time of many highs and lows, but we are now seeing glimpses of the sun over the crest of the hill, and with Spring coming on there is a vibe in the air that is almost electric. It kick starts your day and makes you feel so good. Outside, my roses are budding up, I’m working on getting my vegie garden ready to plant, the catttle are still chewing us out of hay and the drive/walk to the morning bus stop isn’t so darned icy! Inside, work on my novel - and ideas on another story which showed up on my head last week when I least expected it - are finally progressing.

Every family has wintery times, and I truly think it’s a period of challenge to make us revaluate what and who really counts. It’s also a time to provide and receive love and support from those around us who really care. Here on our hilly farm, we are so lucky to have a core group of fabulous family and friends who are always there when we need them. I hope they know, we are there for them too.

It’s like this in the book world as well.

So where would we be without our fabulous local bookstores?

It’s here that we gather to feast on a diverse range of novels, which may or may not have been a recent release, a best seller or cover a topic that is obscure. It’s here we chat to our local bookseller and find out about books we might not necessarily have thought to read before. And it’s these local bookstores who are at the forefront of championing home-grown Australian author’s like me. Without our local bookstore, it would be difficult to access back copies of my books. Without our local bookstore, you mightn’t even know I’d written one book let alone seven …

This Saturday, along with another local Gippsland author, the fabulous Honey Brown, I will be in Traralgon between 2pm and 4pm at one of my local bookstores - the delightful Readers Emporium, (121 Franklin Street), chatting about what Australian stories mean to me. Come say hello and tell us what Australia stories mean to you.

Sorry everybody - the book tour has started so I'm on the road again (queue singing...).

I will be posting some stuff about the wonderful launch night as soon as I can, but suffice to say, if you leave the kids in charge of the camera you are going to get a lot of photos of faces being pulled. Will have to sort through and see what I can find that's "publishable". It was a fabulous night, and I'm so very grateful and thrilled that so many of you lovely beautiful people came.

Before I forget too - today I'm being interviewed on ABC Statewide Drive (doing the interview this morning, will be played sometime this afternoon). Will shout if I find out a time that it's going to be played on air.

Right... Tour photos I can do. First Readers Emporium in Traralgon with Andrea, Mark, Jesse and Annabelle. Beautiful shop, lovely helpful, knowledgeable staff. Go there if you're in Traralgon.

Next up was a lovely time with the Paynesville Writers Group at Bairnsdale. This is a fabulous, active, busy, friendly group and it was a wonderful chance to catch up with them all.
